Connected Bus Shelter

In a world of increasing demand for connectivity, the connected bus shelter demonstrates how street furniture and city infrastructure such as ubiquitous bus shelters, traffic lights, public information panels, kiosks, rubbish bins and power poles, can become Smart City connectivity hubs and enablers for the Internet of Things (IOT) – a world where millions of devices and machines are connected.

The Connected Bus Shelter opens up new business model opportunities by providing a broadband connection to the shelter.  This connection enables various business model layers.  The layers include a Service Provider layer where mobile operators connect access points to the shelter and pay rental fees.  An advertising layer is enabled that open up dynamic advertising opportunities to enhance the advertising revenue stream.  An enhanced service layer offers route planning using multiple modes of transportation, ticket purchasing, and also event and ticket combination purchases to be made instantly.  Finally, a sensors layer is possible, with 3rd parties paying rental fees for sensor placement on the shelter.   The shelter’s owner could also collect certain sensor data and monetize the information by making it available to 3rd parties. This initial phase of the market trial is assessing consumer interest in interactive capabilities and mobile service provider business model viability of small cell attachment and fiber backhaul.
